Cannes Film Festival Winners

The Cannes Film Festival was established in 1939 by the French minister for Public Instruction and the Arts, Jean Zay with the desire to enhance the film making industry and help out the emerging film makers, hence, the birth of the "Festival International du Film". The Festival International du Film later then changed its name into Cannes Film Festival in 1946 when the former Casino de Cannes opened its door for the said film festival.
During the Cannes Film Festival competition, a selected number of individuals will
act as jurors to determine the Cannes Film Festival winners of various categories. The jury that will determine the Cannes Film Festival winners are made up of a selection of film professionals. The jury will hand out its list of Cannes Film Festival winners on the closing ceremonies. The most prestigious award of the Cannes Film Festival winners is the "Palme d`Or" or "Golden Palm". This award is given out to the Cannes Film Festival winner for best film. Although the Cannes Film Festival awards was first given out in 1946 the Palme d`Or was given out on 1955. The Palme d`Or is considered as one of the most distinguished prizes in the film industry. The second most prestigious award of the Cannes Film Festival winners is the "Grand Prix".

The first Cannes Film Festival winner for the Palme d`Or (Golden Palm) was awarded in 1955 to the film "Martyr" by Delbert Mann.
The Cannes Film Festival winners are presented with a work that is made by a contemporary artist. In 1954, the Board of Directors of the Cannes Film Festival invited several well known jewelers to design the trophy for the Palme d`Or. They asked the jewelers to submit designs for a palm leaf, which was and still is the coat of arms of the city of Cannes.
Up until now, there are only about five two-time Cannes Film Festival winners of the Golden Palms. The 59th Cannes Film Festival winner for Golden Palm or Palme d`Or is "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" by Ken Loach.
