Surgery - Part of the Treatment
Generally basic treatment methods like stretching exercises or
some medicines are prescribed as treatment measures for the carpal tunnel syndrome. However, if the situation does not improve by this form of treatment, surgery is the only option left. Surgery, usually involves division of the wrist ligaments which cover the carpal tunnel. In the process of the surgery, the tendon bursae is also removed partially. The surgery also involves the release of scar around the median nerve. The process is vital in reducing the pressure on the median nerve, which is the basic problem. The process of the surgery is also very simple.
In the surgery, the patient is only given a local anaesthsia. This is followed by an incision which is made in the proximal palm and the nerve is operated upon so as to reduce the pressure. After the surgery, the patient can recover fully within three months. He would not suffer any kind of pain in the wrist. The doctors have an option of performing the surgery by two methods. The first method of performing the surgery involves the traditional technique of open surgery. The second method involves the use of a telescope to see the nerve and the transverse ligament. The surgery performed with the help of a telescope is called endoscopic surgery. Today, the endoscopic surgery is preferred as it makes a smaller incision, is less complicated, has faster recovery and faster rehabilitation.
After the surgery is performed, most of the people do not experience the trouble again. They are permanently relieved from the pain and discomfort. However, if the nerve suffers a permanent damage in the course of the syndrome, it is possible that the symptoms might persist even after the surgery. This pain is due to tendon bursae diseases and end up in a nerve dysfunction. However, this happens in very rare cases.
Surgery is done only when all other techniques fail. It is the last resort and is only required in very advanced stages of carpal tunnel syndrome.
