Cerebral Palsy Brain- Effects of the DisorderCerebral palsy is the term used to describe a group of chronic conditions affecting body movements and muscle co-ordination. It is caused by damage to one or more specific areas to the motor part of the brain, usually occurring during birth or after the birth of the child. The term cerebral refers to the two hemispheres of the brain and palsy refers to a disorder of movement or posture. It is characterized by the to fully control the motor functions of the
brain due to the lack of supply of oxygen or an accident causing injury to the brain during the fetal development. It is also characterized by the loss of movements or loss of other nerve functions.
Effects of CP on the Brain
Cerebral palsy is normally caused due to the injury to the brain or lack of blood supply or oxygen to the brain. The other reasons behind the cerebral palsy are infections to the brain by certain virus, premature births, infections during pregnancy, blood diseases, severe jaundice and many such reasons which are yet to be discussed or found. In short, the disorder is caused due to damage or injury to the brain.
There are many effects observed and studied in a cerebral palsy affected child or adult. People with damage to their cerebellum have a problem with balance, especially while walking. These people have common disorders with visual or auditory processing of objects. Persons with this disorder suffer from involuntary body movements. This is due to the damage caused to the extra pyramidal motor system and the basal ganglia. With respect to these disorders, the other signs and symptoms such as weakening of muscles and bones, abnormal posture, abnormal speech, abnormal behavior, learning abilities, communication disorders, reflexes and various other side effects are also observed. The signal is not carried from the brain to the muscles entirely or partly. Mental retardation is also one of the major disorders observed in the CP affected person.
Cure
There is no cure to CP, but various forms of therapy can help the person with disorder to function more effectively. Many treatments focus on helping the person to develop as many motor skills as possible. Thus a proper treatment to these people could see these people lead a productive life.
