Cerebral Palsy Genetic-'Chromosomal Aberrations'

Glossary:

Cerebral palsy causes damage to the nervous system due to certain injuries or diseases occurring before or during birth. This is also called 'Brain damage' or 'Developmental Brain Malformation'. The major types of cerebral palsy are spastic cerebral palsy, Athetoid cerebral palsy, Ataxic cerebral palsy and mixed cerebral palsy. The part of the body to be affected depends on the type of brain damage done. The experts who deal with this are pediatricians,
neurologists and certain therapists.

The causative agents:

This may result due to an Rh or ABO blood type incompatibity between mother and infants.
Premature delivery, a detached placenta, long labor, breech birth, multiple births, radiation exposure, maternal exposure, German measles, brain infections, long births and multiple births, infections and also because of oxygen deficiency. There could be pathogenic attack due to micro organisms. This may also be because of the bleeding in the brain that is called 'Intraventricular Hemorrhage'. Failure to recognize the seizure during the delivery and failure to detect the prolapsed umbilical cord can also be major reasons. There could excessive use of vacuum extraction and there could be failure to perform caesarean section and cause fetal distress.

Therapy:

There are various types of therapies that are Physical, Occupation, Speech and Language therapy, Surgery, Drug treatment, Sensory Integration Therapy and use of Adaptive Therapy. The physical therapy involves riding, jogging, walking, kicking, throwing which help in making the muscuo-skeletal framework of the body strong. The occupational therapy involves being abreast to the day-to-day woks to lead a normal life. The Speech and Language therapy helps in developing the linguistic skills and match the intelligence levels to that of the other children of the same age group. Surgeries can be performed on the abductor muscles in the leg, release the muscle contratures to be able to walk properly and the use of splints and braces.
The Sensory Integration Treatment: This helps in stimulating the senses and pressure. This makes use of Styrofoam chips, water or the textures toys and to motivate the children to interact better. The adaptive therapies employ use of devices like the walker, wheelchair, Communication aids and Alphabet boards.
