Cerebral Palsy Infant- Early stages of CP and its SymptomsCerebral Palsy is a term referred to a group of disorders that affect the movement of your body. It is caused due to the lack of supply of oxygen to the brain. It happens to an infant during birth or after few months of birth. It could also happen when an accident takes place affecting your brain The brain is unable to send right signals to the muscles. As a result, the posture of the body is affected and muscles and limbs become weak. This disorder could also
happen to the infants because delivery mistakes, birth injuries, premature deliveries and many more.
Causes of Cerebral palsy in infants: -
One of the forms of injuries is termed as asphyxia, which can affect the brain of an infant in various ways and is the main cause for CP in this age group. The three most common causes of asphyxia are blocking of foreign objects like toys and food, damage of brain when physically traumatized, a motor vehicle accident or physical abuse to the brain of an infant. Severe infections can cause disabilities ranging from hearing loss to Cerebral Palsy to severe retardation.
Effects of Cerebral Palsy in infant: -
Although causes of CP are not known clearly, Cerebral palsy may also be caused due to various infections to the brain. Children with disabilities have common problems that involve communication with the family members, abnormal posture, speech problems, grasping problems and many such problems. A child could even become a mentally retarded person depending on the severity of the disorder. Children affected with cerebral palsy may not be able to interact with people properly. There are various types of cerebral palsy observed such as Spastic CP, Athetoid CP, Ataxic CP and Mixed CP. Spastic CP has further classifications such as 1) Hemiplegia in which one side is affected more than the other. 2) Diplopia in which the lower body is being more affected than the upper one. 3) Quadriplegia in which all four limbs are affected equally.
Predominant muscle movement and muscle co-ordination is observed along with learning disorder and speech problem due to which the infant becomes a social misfit. This does affects the child a lot. CP is a non-progressive disorder and it cannot be cured either. But some measures can be taken to minimize the effect cause due to cerebral palsy.
