Cerebral Palsy and Aging - Does Age Matter?

The term cerebral palsy refers to a group of disorders in the movement of body that occurs during birth or just after few months of birth. It happens either due to less supply of oxygen or an accident in which the brain of the infant is affected and many other reasons. Cerebral palsy cases are also found in adults. Again it could be due to less supply of oxygen, accident, vascular problems that normally occur as the person grows old or a probably because of a
paralysis attack.

Relation between aging and CP

There actually exists a relation in cerebral palsy and aging. As mentioned above, the vascular problems or problems related to heart are one of the common aspects that have a connection with both aging as well as Cerebral palsy. As the age of a person goes on increasing, the functionality of the heart goes on decreasing due to which there could be a lack of blood supply to the brain as the blood carries oxygen within it. This could result into Cerebral palsy to an aged person. The most common feature observed in cerebral palsy and aging is weakening of all the body muscles and the result of an abnormal posture of people. The hearing of the people becomes weak and so does the speech of these people is affected.

Adults with cerebral palsy and those who deliver services to these people have expressed a concern about the individuals affected with cerebral palsy having negative effect of aging process. They do fell like they are disabled persons. They experience a rapid decline in the functioning of the body and decrease in the energy levels. Disabilities having longer duration could produce excessive wear and tear of muscles and other body systems. Arthritis is a common problem with aged people affected by cerebral palsy. Statistics show that 40% of people get affected by arthritis due to cerebral palsy. As people with cerebral palsy get older, they tend o do things very slowly such as walking, talking, dressing or eating. They might even require a personal assistant to do their work.

Unfortunately there is not much available information available to help these people. The combination of aging and disability is an unexplored area. Each person is affected differently depending on the severity of the disorder. Efforts are being made on how to deal with and help these people.
