Cerebral palsy statistics- Important Factor in Studying the Disorder

Cerebral Palsy or CP as it is commonly called is an umbrella like term use to describe a group of chronic disorders impairing movement control that appears in first few years of life and generally does not worsen over the time. The disorders are caused by a faulty development or damage to motor areas to the brain that disrupts the brain's ability to control the movement or posture. It usually occurs during fetal development or during
infancy.

Statistics of Cerebral Palsy: -

Statistics is one of the most vital factors that are considered in the studying of the deadly disorder. Studies reveal that there are about 4 to 5 cases per 10000 births. The people affected with CP have common disabilities of communication, speech, hearing, body movements and many more. Studies also reveal that early signs of Cerebral Palsy appear before three to four years of age. Infants with these disorders are usually slow to reach the development milestones such as sitting, crawling, smiling and many more. These statistics could prove an important input for research and studies of Cerebra palsy.

According to the recent survey, 3000 babies are born with the disorder each year in United States, and about 1,500 pre-schoolers are diagnosed with CP during the first three years of life. In 70% cases, cerebral palsy if found with some other disorder, the most common being mental retardation. Despite the medical advances, the incidence of CP has actually increased over the time. More detailed studies have found that prevalence of CP has remained very stable for many years. The incidence increases with pre mature or low weight babies regardless the quality of care taken to handle them. Twins are also four times more likely to develop Cerebral Palsy than single births.

Despite medical advances, in some cases the incidence of CP has actually increased over time. This may be attributed to medical advances in areas related to premature babies or the increased usage of artificial fertilization techniques. These statistics could help the research and other institutions in developing some cure or medicine that would help in eliminating the disorder or at least minimizing it.
