Chronic fatigue syndrome is also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) or Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS). Chronic Fatigue Syndrome basically refers to a group of disorders affecting the central nervous system. It is characterized by fatigue, weakness, headaches, lymph node swelling and muscle pain, depression and sleep disturbances. It is a nervous disorder and is a debilitating condition. It is a disorder that affects multiple systems including
neurological, hormonal and immunological. Chronic fatigue syndrome is more common in females than males.

Causes of chronic fatigue syndrome

The exact cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is not known. It is possible that people with chronic fatigue syndrome have a dysfunctional immune and nervous system .It is also possible that a virus causes this disorder, as the symptoms are similar to a viral infection. Other potential risk factors are anemia, low blood sugar, endocrine dysfunction and neurological problems.

Diagnosis and treatment

It is often difficult to diagnose chronic fatigue syndrome, as there is no single diagnostic test for it. Besides, the symptoms of this disorder are similar to many other ailments such as kidney disease, cardiac disease, hypothyroidism and neurological disorders. Blood tests and other laboratory tests can be done to screen other ailments.
There is no reliable cure for this disorder. As the cause of this disorder is not known, the treatment is basically symptomatic. The symptoms and the treatment may differ from person to person. People who remain active show more improvement. Regular and well-planned exercise helps in the healing process. A healthy and balanced diet helps reduce symptoms and discomfort. A good therapist or counselor can help overcome chronic fatigue syndrome. Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and acetaminophen provide necessary relief. Anti-depressants also help reduce the symptoms and improve sleep patterns. It is advised that the patients go for regular reviews to the practitioner. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the most effective in treating chronic fatigue syndrome. It focuses on helping people to identify with their thoughts and behavior. It enables people to cope with the symptoms.
According to the CDC (Centers For Disease Control and Prevention), almost half of the people with chronic fatigue syndrome experience full or partial recovery within five years.
