Ductwork Insulation

Ductwork is used in a house for heating, ventilating and cooling as well as for any other conduit reasons. It is recommended that ductwork should be insulated for energy efficiency in a house. While ductwork insulation is more or less covered when other areas of the house are installed with insulation, it is important to remember that ductwork that passes through unconditioned areas of the house also needs insulation.

Activities
before ductwork insulation

Duct joints that connect two ducts must be checked and cemented. This will prevent any leaks or gaps and enable better insulation. Also any gaps or repairs that need to be undertaken for ductwork must be carried out before insulation activity begins. The use of duct tape is generally avoided as it is not suitable for permanent applications and may fall off after a period of time. An insulation contractor should be hired to detect faulty ductwork and if necessary replace it before he starts installation any insulation.

Why is ductwork insulation important?

Ductwork insulation is important because it helps to maintain the temperature at normal for the air and water passing through the duct. This helps save a lot of energy and results in reduced utility bills. Also, condensation that occurs on cool ducts that pass through hot non-conditioned spaces in the house, in warmer months, can be prevented with the help of ductwork insulation. Ductwork insulation ensures that the benefits of insulation gained from other areas of the house is not wasted and is put to good use.

Materials used in ductwork insulation

Foil faced fiberglass and bubble wrap, rock and slag wool, loose-fill that does not contain cellulose are used for ductwork insulation. The right kind of material can be decided by the insulation contractor who will consider the use and specifications of the ductwork in existence in the house and then give suggestions accordingly. This kind of insulation activity is to be carried out by professional insulation contractors who are trained in detecting and installing the right kind of insulation material required, increasing the energy efficiency of the house through correct insulation.
