Finding Help within You in How to Manage and Conquer Depression

Depression, anxiety, and other such related ailments can make an individual weak psychologically as well as physically. The depressive symptoms could lead to loss of self-confidence, mistaken beliefs, while leaving the individual feeling helpless. The feelings accumulating inside one's mind could lead to drastic results and/or in extreme cases to suicides. Nevertheless, one must remember that such negative feelings is just a part of depression and does not represent the entire situation correctly. All these thoughts begin to fade out as the treatment for depression begins. As the treatment, progresses we must keep in mind certain things and try to follow certain objectives. A few of those are as mentioned below:
1. Do not overstrain yourself with
work. Take in hand only as much work that you can easily handle without overstretching yourself.
2. Divide your work according to priorities. First things first, the rest can be done later.
3. Try to engage yourself in-group activities, be in place where you can talk to people and discuss your everyday issues.
4. Try to be more open to people and less secretive. Find out someone in whom you can confide your feelings.
5. Go out for walk early morning, the fresh air will really lift up your mood. Go for a walk at night with your spouse or friend or your child. Talk with them about your day.
6. Go out to play occasionally or watch a movie every weekend. These breaks are good stress busters. This way you connect with the outer world and forget your worries.
7. Tell yourself everyday that you are feeling better now. Keep a smiling face. Depression will never go in a day or two. It might take anything from a few weeks to a few months in order to, permanently change the way you feel.
8. Postpone any major decision until you fully recover from depression. Decisions like getting married or divorced or change of jobs can wait until you recover fully to analyze the situation with a balanced mind.
9. Always think positive, read books like "The power of positive thinking" by Vincent Peale or numerous others on the same theme available in the market. Replacing your negative thoughts by positive ones will go a long way in helping you come out of depression. The more positive your thoughts will become, the lesser your depression will become.
10. Always seek help from family and friends. They too care about you and try to follow their advice too.

Family and Friends can help too:
As a friend or loving member of the family, it is your moral responsibility and is in the best interest of everyone to take the patient of depression to a qualified psychologist or physician for the best-suited treatment. Your responsibility does not end with this only; you must patiently encourage the affected person to stay on with the therapy until some results appear. It may even take a few weeks. You must carefully monitor the patient's progress, including his or her everyday activities. Monitoring the patient can let you know whether he/she is taking the prescribed medicines on time. A patient of Depression needs maximum moral and emotional support. You must be able to understand that the affected person is going through a rough phase and you must be able to understand that he or she might be impolite with you sometimes. In spite of all this, you must still keep a cool head and just try to relax the patient. Encourage the patient to take part in-group activities, talk to you as much as possible.
Whatever may happen, never accuse the affected individual of faking illness or being lazy unnecessarily or expect him/her to, suddenly recover from it. It will only worsen the case. Bide your time and follow the above mentioned to see the best possible results.
