Gay and Lesbian Film FestivalSummary: Openly opposed in the past for morality issues, some organizations did scale ethical barriers to provide the 'queer' a piece of limelight.
Dub as 'the Queer', gay and lesbian film festivals are slowly maturing from the 'anonymous' film festivals to widely acknowledged sector of the cinema industry. Though being openly opposed in the past for morality issues, some organizations such as the TLA Entertainment Group did scale ethical barriers to provide the 'queer' elements of the society a piece of the limelight.
Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film
Festival
When the unbiased TLA Group was founded in 1981 as a repertory cinema and a video rental store, the group focused on independent, Hollywood classics, foreign, gay and lesbian theme and current blockbusters. Because of their neutral stance with regards to the choices of customers, soon they became highly successful, morphing quickly into one of the recognized leaders of entertainment industry. And now to meet the demands of over 200,000 customers and 100,000 mailing list clientele, the TLA categorized its video rentals into three catalogs according to the three main classes of its customers: gay and lesbian, straight adult, and general movies.
The Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival was founded by the TLA Group in 1995. This event showcases films of gay and lesbian theme and attracting an attendance of over 25,000 making it the largest gay and lesbian film festival in the United States East Coast. Because the event features uninhibited programming and a calendar packed of parties and activities (typical Gay/Lesbian atmosphere), it earned the title of the sexiest gay and lesbian film festival in the country.
London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival
The London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival was established in 1986 in the recent wake of successes by sexuality campaigners. But before the festival's formal beginnings, the British Film Industry had already experiences in transgender issues in their 1977 survey of gay and lesbian cinema that also bore a publication called Gays and Films.
Although it started without an actual organization, it was on its 3rd function when the event was rightfully called the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. That was in 1988 when a lesbian Penny Ashbrook took the reigns as the co-programmer. The event was a success with over 40 filmmakers taking part.
Now, The London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival is approaching its 20th year featuring blockbuster films, short films, artist films and experimental works.
Though some queer films were on limited or tight budget, other organizations have several distinguished personalities as sponsors. Like the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival which has sponsorships from multinational corporations like citigroup, JPMorgan, UBS and Renault. Film personalities like Elton John and Ian McKellen are also honorary patrons.
