Gorilla Fur Coat, Banned from Use!Gorillas are one of the exotic animals living on earth. A number of them are found in Zaire, Uganda and Rwanda, and they tend to live in mountains away from people. They belong to the family of the apes, to which chimpanzees, orangutans and bonobos belong.
Gorillas are considered nowadays as endangered species because most of their habitats are being taken over for farming and gorillas, being harmful to crops, are killed. There are also others who hunt these beasts for profits and just for souvenirs. But, because of the diminishing number of gorillas, several laws were passed to
control the capture and sale of these endangered species. Many countries in the world have already passed and enforced these laws, the reason that gorilla fur coats and other accessories made from gorilla fur are not usually found in the market for purchase.
Well, one of the countries that strongly prohibit the use and sale of gorilla fur coats is the United Kingdom. Several animal laws were passed holding the preservation of endangered species like the gorillas, and perhaps one of the strongest laws known in the United Kingdom that protects the rights of animals is the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, which was passed in 1975.
It is interesting to know that it is supposedly under this law that the Big Brother celebrity, Pete Burns, could have been arrested and prosecuted for wearing an alleged gorilla fur coat. According to some reports, many animal rights campaigners in the United Kingdom have encouraged viewers to vote Pete Burns off the Big Brother Celebrity edition after he boasted a gorilla fur coat which he allegedly sported on the show. Burns was warned that he could face jail for wearing that banned coat made from an endangered species. Burns himself had claimed that the coat he wore was made from gorilla fur, and that what actually made him a strong suspect for breaching the endangered animal laws set by the UK government. The coat was seized by the police and was submitted for test.
However, based on certain studies conducted to find out the authenticity of the said gorilla fur coat, it was noted that the coat Burns wore during the Big Brother show is not made from gorilla fur, but from black and white colobus monkeys, which just like gorillas are native to Africa. It was also reported after the experts' analysis that the said gorilla fur coat was in a relatively poor condition. But, because of Burns unawareness of the law, he wasn't arrested and detailed, but what he did during the show did not, however, prevent him from being evicted from the house.
The endangered animal laws are not only strongly maintained in the United Kingdom, but also in other countries in the world. And, the production of gorilla fur coats, being a product made from an endangered species, is now strongly banned. With this, it's no wonder that gorilla fur coats are almost nowhere in sight these days.
