Always make sure your child has a sunscreen
with a sun protection factor of at least 25. If you are on a beach with rocks and tide pools, have them throw on a pair of shoes. This is to protect them from potential puncture wounds and bacteria. The sun s ultra-violet rays are not only damaging to the skin but also to the eyes. Try and get them to wear sunglasses whenever possible. The risk of heatstroke or heat exhaustion during your beach vacation is high between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Try to get them to stay indoors during those times and make sure they stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water every hour or so. Signs of heatstroke can include headache, dizziness, muscle weakness or cramps, nausea, or trouble breathing. Seek medical attention if any of these warning signs occur. Swim Precautions Keep an eye on your kids at all times and pay attention to posted surf warnings. Teach your kids about swimming dangers such as the undertow. Remind them to NEVER panic and NEVER fight against the current. Many swimmers who do this wear themselves out and risk drowning. Let them know if they find themselves caught in the undertow, they should swim parallel to the shore until they get past the area affected by the currents. Make sure they always stay aware of jellyfish and other stinging animals during your beach vacation. If they are stung, do not rinse the affected area with fresh or tap water. Instead, rinse the affected area with alcohol or vinegar and remove the any remaining stingers. If swelling occurs or symptoms are severe, seek medical attention immediately.
