While the list of film festivals could get tediously long, only a handful of film festivals could make it to the top. Since the first breaking of France from the Mostra di Venezia to come up with Cannes, numerous nations also bloomed with their own list of film festivals, with successes that are poles apart in contrasts.
Perhaps leading the list of film festivals would be the Cannes International Film Festival of France. No other film festival has the glitz and glamour the Cannes Film Festival exudes. So much glitz and glamour in the event that it also
became an extension of the fashion statements supposedly only made on catwalks that showcase artists, movie producers and directors. Whatever the intentions, these prestigious personalities do strut in the Cannes despite being packed sardines in the Cannes. But not only Tom Ford and Donna Karan have prospects in Cannes, also film producers looking for investors and artists hunting for the next big project.
The success of the Toronto International Film Festival Group is the chief reason why TIFFG is among the top list of film festivals. The organization operates on an annual budget of $12 million but earns the quadrupled annual income of $67 million CAD.
Variety Magazine recognized the TIFFG as second to the Cannes Film Festival in terms glitz, glamour and elegance. It also comes close in terms of market activity whether it be filming industry or fashion deals or modeling contracts. Equally quoted by the National Post claiming "...although Cannes is still larger, Toronto is more useful and more important". Perhaps it is the set of dynamic initiatives that made The Toronto International Film Festival Group highly competitive.
Chicago International Film Festival may be North America's oldest competitive international film festival, but that doesn't equate as being the reason for its success as one of the best in the list of film festivals. Certain dignified accolades such as John Carpenter (of Aliens and StarWars fame), Martin Scorsese (of Goodfellas and Casino fame) and Peter Greenway (the 2005 Amsterdam VJ Performance) are emergent of this annual Chicago event.
Though some haven't got the usual recipes for elegance, others like The Waterfront International Film Festival of Saugatuck do deliver their own. Originally a town fair that also serves free delights in public silver screens (huge canvases propped in public areas for viewing), it tradition turned out to be the among the most prestigious list of film festivals. Before locals and visitors of nearby towns are Saugatuck's main guests; now filmgoers, actors and actresses, producers, directors and distinguished personalities of worldwide cinema come to participate on the annual event. Now known as the Waterfront Film Festival this celebrated event takes place each June and showcases outstanding films in a casual and intimate setting at no cost.
