Details of Loss of Red Blood Cells (RBCs) through Urine
The loss of RBCs through urine is known as Hematuria. The degree of problem of the loss of RBCs
through urine varies. Usually, the problem is not very serious and can be treated with basic medication or no medication at all. In rare cases, the problem can be serious and a result of some trouble in the urinary tract. The degree of hematuria differs. Sometimes, the level of blood in the urine is so minute that it is not even visible and the urine seems perfectly normal. This form of hematuria is also known as microscopic hematuria. In some cases, when there is some more amount of blood in the urine, it is visible as the urine looks pink, smoky, red or brown.
In fact, almost all individuals have some amount of blood in their urine. Having blood in the urine is a normal phenomenon, the only factor is that the blood is not visible in the urine. It has been observed that on an average, a normal individual with a healthy urinary tract emits around one million RBCs everyday. This phenomenon is not considered hematuria.
However, if there is a severe blood loss of more than average level, it comes under hematuria. Hematuria can occur once or become chronic. Hematuria is caused due to glomerular damage, kidney disorders, tumors along the urinary tract, nephrotoxins and physical stress. Hematuria can also be caused urinary tract stones, severe tubular necrosis and urinary tract infections. According to medical surveys, it is observed that approximately 10% people suffer from hematuria and 3% people suffer from gross hematuria. Also, women have a higher risk of suffering from hematuria more than men.
Most of the times, hematuria does not cause any severe health trouble to the individual. However, it is possible that hematuria becomes more complex and severe with some grave effects.
