Students with Cerebral Palsy- A Deadly Disorder

Cerebral Palsy also known as CP also known as CP is caused due to the injury to the brain. It is a disorder caused by the damage to the brain during or shortly after birth affecting the ability to control movement and the body posture. It is caused due to the lack of supply of oxygen to the brain or an accident in which there could be an injury to the brain. CP is not a disease and so it is not a progressive, communicable, inherited or a primary cause of death. Studies reveal that there are approximately
3000 new cases of cerebral palsy per year in the developed countries.

Causes of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy may be caused due to various reasons. The main reasons are the lack of supply to the oxygen to the brain and an accident in which there is an injury to the brain. The other subordinate reasons are infection during pregnancy, vigorous shaking of the child to make him sleep, infections to the brain during fetal development, severe jaundice, and many other reasons. Although the cause of this disorder is not identified, the above mentioned reasons are the evidences that took place before the child or the person was affected by cerebral palsy.

Effects of Cerebral Palsy

The common effects that are found in the students are weakening of muscles and bones due to which the body posture is affected, learning disorders, visual, speech and hearing disorders, and abnormal behavior. Abnormal sensation and perception, mental retardation, disturbance in gait and mobility are also observed in that person who is affected with CP.

Treatments and Developmental Techniques

Early identifications of cerebral palsy can lessen the developmental problems and lead to appropriate intervention. Educators, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, speech- language pathologists, psychologists and physicians can assist families by providing information and education. Some of the activities that are included in the development of these students are speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, medical intervention, early education and assistive technology. There are positive signs shown by these students who are undergoing various treatments. In a survey, the students demonstrated the characteristics of advanced academic abilities, broad base of knowledge, quickness in learning and many other intellectual skills. So it has been proved that good developmental techniques applied to the students can help them leading real productive lives.
