Teaching Child with Cerebral Palsy - "A difficult job to be accomplished"

Just in the way the degree of cerebral palsy and learning disabilities vary in an individual, the techniques for teaching children with cerebral palsy vary as well. By consulting with several types of specialists you can decide what types of teaching techniques are necessary for teaching children with cerebral palsy. Social workers, occupational and physical therapists, educators, psychologists, physicians and speech-language pathologists can help patients by providing information and
knowledge of various programs and teaching children with cerebral palsy.

Physical Therapists

Physical therapists help in teaching children with cerebral palsy to learn better ways to move and balance and they accomplish this by teaching children with cerebral palsy how to walk, use their wheelchair, stand by themselves or go up and down stairs safely. Physical therapists also encourage on fun skills like running, kicking and throwing a ball or even riding a bike when teaching children with cerebral palsy.

Speech Therapists

Teaching patients communication skills is the primary focus of speech and language therapy. Communication skills include talking, using sign language or using a communication aid. Speech therapists are good for teaching patients that are able to talk and speak more clearly because they help patients build their language skills by learning new words, learning to speak in sentences and improving their listening skills. Teaching patients sign language is also a qualification of a speech therapist and they also teach children how to use a communication aid such as a book or poster with pictures showing things the child might want, or an alphabet board they can use to spell out their message.

Occupational Therapists

Occupational therapists work by teaching patients better ways to use their arms, hands, and upper body. They also teach patients convenient ways to write, draw, cut with scissors, brush their teeth, dress and feed themselves or control their wheel chair. They patients find the right special equipment to make everyday jobs easier.

By working with these specialists one can help ease the difficulties of teaching children with cerebral palsy. The techniques for teaching them can also be carried over into the home to expand the patient's learning environment. A supportive family working with the child and helping teach him can produce great results.
