Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome
This syndrome results in numbness and inflammation of nerves present in the carpal tunnel. This is accompanied with a tingling feeling. This syndrome usually
occurs because of extra fluid retention in the nerves during pregnancy and menopause amongst women. It also results due to excessive pressure exerted on the median nerves. It may also follow after diseases such as hypothyroidism, rheumatic arthritis and diabetes.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome is very important. This avoids permanent damage of the nerves. The tests used during this process are usually pertaining to the symptoms shown by the patient. Each finger is tested in order to check for sensation and pain. The muscles are examined for strength and rigidity. X-ray tests are conducted in order to examine fractures, arthritis and diabetes. Sometimes the physicians have to use tests in order to produce the carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms among patients. One such test is the Tinel test. In this test the doctor taps or applies pressure on the median nerve of the patient. This test shows positive result when it causes similar symptoms the patient is complaining of. The Phalen or wrist-flexion test is usually conducted on the forearms of the patient. In this test the patient is asked to hold his or her forearms upright with the fingers pointing down and pressing the backs of the hands together. Due to this test the nerves are compressed. Like the Tinel test, this test too is positive if it produces similar symptoms as complained by the patient. The diagnosis is then confirmed with the help of electrodiagnostic tests. A devise called as the EMG, electromyogram, is used to detect abnormalities in nerve impulse conduction.
After diagnosis
After the diagnosis is confirmed the syndrome is treated. In case for inflammation of nerves, an anti-inflammatory drug is injected into the nerve. The simplest of all treatments is to shun all the physical causes of this disease. Depending on the severity of the disorder its treatment is decided.
