The Deauville Film FestivalSummary: The Deauville Film Festival can be observed as a laidback event compared to Cannes but still ahs worldwide impact in terms of raw and emerging talent of its participants
When the Deauville Film Festival emerged in 1975 in Deauville, France the film event was never competitive. Just like some other moderately funded film festival similar to the Waterfront Film Festival. But then in 1995, to attract more participants to the year's events, Deauville Film Festival began to award honors and prices for feature films and short
subject.
Technically so, the Deauville Film Festival's slow start can be attributed to the presence of the film festival giants like The Cannes International Film Festival and The Toronto International Film Festival. Though can be run with extremely low budget, being a laid back event had its major flaws. Non competitive showcase can have a tough time attracting the Hollywood studio personality or even Hollywood caliber talents.
The establishing of award and prices gave the Deauville Film Festival a competitive edge. Though it is still laidback, the new award addition did make wonders. Now first time screenwriters, directors and producers now head to the Deauville Film Festival to promote their films as much as they would go to the Cannes International Film Festival.
The Deauville Film Festival can be observed as an equalizer to the high living of the Cannes Festival and the competitiveness of the Toronto Festival. With its beachfront venue, it strictly departs from those chic experiences to a milder festive climate. And since the recent inception of the 10 film competition, things have started to lighten up as film personalities have come to accept and appreciate the nature of the Deauville Film Festival.
The current Deauville Film Festival juries includes: director and screenwriter Alain Corneau who also acts as the president, actress Dominique Blanc, actress Romane Bohringer, actress Rachida Brakni, director and screenwriter Brigitte Roüan, actor, director and screenwriter Enki Bilal, singer and songwriter Christophe, director and screenwriter Dominique Moll, , actor, singer and songwriter Melvil Poupaud. Tributes are being credited to Ron Howard, Forrest Whittaker, James Toback and Robert Towne.
The Deauville Film Festival is a worldwide film festival today. It is still laidback and regular, but because of this, budding talents can find the Deauville Film Festival a more heartening welcome than the stiff Cannes competition. With the Deauville mayor Anne d'Ornano at the helm, the Deauville Film Festival has flourished. If facts be told, the Deauville Film Festival of 1991 boasts of two World Premiers Sets: John Frankenheimer's "Year of the Gun" with Sharon Stone and Robert Mulligan's "The Man in the Moon".
