The Government s Role in Expanding Broadband Availability The sad truth about today s

rural areas must often resort to expensive satellite broadband if they are going to have broadband availability. The government feels that broadband should be available to all Americans, and several agencies are taking steps to ensure that this occurs in the near future. Description of Broadband Broadband is a technology that not only includes Internet access, but also voice on demand, video services, and interactive delivery of information. Broadband is a vital part of the recent revolution in communications. With
broadband access, the geographic barriers that keep some people from information are eliminated and the time needed to access information is dramatically reduced with broadband availability. Problems with Getting Broadband to Everyone The problem with providing broadband availability to everyone in America is that the infrastructure is not yet available throughout the country. The cost of getting broadband to everyone is still rather high, and there is still limited access in areas that are underserved. The final problem is that when broadband availability does become possible in underserved areas, sometimes there are few people who will advantage of it; making the cost of providing access not worth it for the limited number of customers. What the Government is doing The government wants all Americans to have broadband availability and therefore is currently trying to promote broadband in areas that do not have it. It is also trying to regulate the treatment of broadband services. The government is doing all it can to encourage people to invest in broadband technologies, as well as encouraging innovation in the services offered. They are trying to regulate the competing services, such as satellite and cable internet, so that they compete more realistically. Finally, the government is trying to educate consumers about the benefits of broadband, hoping to create more need for the technology. As broadband availability is spread across the country, there are more and more people taking advantage of it. For those who choose not to have broadband at home, they can go to coffee houses, libraries, and other hot spots to access public broadband connections. With information delivered to consumers at a much faster speed, the government hopes to help stabilize and grow the American economy, as well as increasing technological advances. The government also wishes to have those living in more rural, agricultural areas not lag behind when it comes to technology. With expanding broadband Internet availability, no longer will people be hindered by their location.
