Types of insulation-"Securing Homes Throughout the Year" There are majority of insulation available in the market, but the right kinds are difficult to find. The Internet provides a good source of information for the insulation methods.
Types and descriptions:
Blanket insulation: The materials used are fiberglass, rock or slag, wool, plastic fibers and the natural fibers. This can be adjusted in the walls, floors and the ceilings. This can be installed between studs, joists and beams. Concrete Block insulation:
the materials are beads of polyurethane, polystyrene and polyiso. These are adjusted between the foundation walls during the new constructions or renovations. This can be installed only with the help ion the masons. Rigid Foam: it is made of polystyrene. This can be fitted in the unfinished walls, foundation walls, floors and ceilings. The exterior application is covered with a weatherproof board and the interior with gypsum.
Insulating concrete forms (ICFs): This is made of the foam blocks. This can be installed in the wall cavities, unfinished attic and the hard to reach places. This is generally blown in places with the help of special equipment. Reflective System: this is made of the plastic film, polyethylene bubbles and cardboard. This can be inserted in the unfinished walls, ceilings and floors.
The rigid fibrous or the fibrous insulation: This is made of the fiberglass mineral and the wool. This is generally placed in the unconditioned places that need to be kept warm. The HVAC contractors insert it. The Sprayed foam and the foam in place: This is made of polyurethane. This can be placed in the cavities and the attic floors. This is fitted by using small spray containers or as large quantities as per the pressure applied. The Structural Insulated Panels (SIP): this is made of the foam board or the insulation core. This can be well inserted in the unfinished walls, ceilings, floors, roofs required in any new construction. The builder does this.
Advantages:
The SIP built houses has the superior and uniform insulation. These take less time to build. The rigid fibers can withstand the heavy and adverse temperature conditions. The reflective system prevents the downward flow of heat. The ICFs has a high thermal efficiency. The foam board can restrict the thermal short circuits. The blanket is free from any obstruction and can be built easily.
